Reflection 1

Chapter one give a basic introduction about what science education is and how science has played a part in the elementary school experience. The chapter also explains where science education is going in the United States in addition to what exactly should be taught in science. The most fundamental theme of the chapter relates to why science should be taught to elementary school students. The subject always seems like it should be an importnant part of the elementary curriculum, yet many future educators are mot sure why. The author uses the example of a child natually being curious and how it can extend into a passion or career. The is possible from the early years of training and learning how to use inquiry to learn science.

Using an inquiry approach includes using observation, investigation, and analysis. According the NSCES, using an inquiry approach in the science classroom parallels the basic procedures many scientists use. For example, teaching the students to ask questions about what they observe, collecting data, and communicating the results to others in a simple manner are all part of using inquiry in science.

Science education is importnant in elementary schools becasue it gives the students a chance to begin to learn the language and manners of the scientific world. As we surley know, the science theories and understanding the many concepts can take a very long time. As students are expected to know many parts of basic science in both high school and college, science education is of high importance to elementary teachers.

  1. You covered many of the important themes in the chapter: the importance of beginning the teaching of science in the early years of a child's life; capitalizing on children's natural sense of wonder and curiosity in the teaching of science; and how such an approach can begin the process of nurturing a child toward a career in science.

Was there anything in the chapter that surprised you or that you found particularly insightful?
